Appointments Appointments are up to 15
minutes. We will always see you the same day when needed. However, if your
doctor is fully booked you will be offered another day or an appointment
with one of the other doctors. If your problem is urgent please explain to
the receptionist, she may ask you to talk to the nurse. All emergencies
will take priority and appointment times are approximate.
A non
attendance fee ($25) may be charged for appointments cancelled without
sufficient notice.
Follow up consultations are not usually
discounted. Please try to see the same doctor where possible for follow up
of the same problem. This will result in better care for
you.
Double appointments are required for: More than one
person attending Insurance medicals IUCD insertion Commercial
diving medicals Immigration medicals Multiple problems Ask the
reception staff to advise you on the correct appointment for
you.
Travel Health If planning travel overseas, we can
help with your pre-travel preparations. Barrington Medical Centre
offers a comprehensive range of vaccines and advice on how to stay healthy
while you are away. When your travel itinerary is known, you can
complete our Travel
Questionnaire and we can arrange your individual travel health
package. Travel health information changes all the time and
requirements vary depending on your past health, which vaccines you have
had before, what you will be doing while you are away and which part of a
particular country you are visiting. We can give you up to date
information about your exact requirements. Vaccines available include
Tetanus, Polio, Japanese Encephalitis, Rabies, Typhoid, Hepatitis A &
B and Influenza. Prescriptions may be required for Malaria
prevention or to treat other upsets such as traveller’s diarrhoea. Most
travellers need to seek advice eight weeks before departure but if you are
leaving at short notice it is never too late to see us.
Have you recently returned from overseas? Do you
have a fever or a bad cough? Are you having trouble breathing or generally
feel unwell? Please phone to speak to a practice nurse who will assess
your condition prior to arriving for an appointment.
Diabetes,
Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles Sue Dawber, our Practice
Nurse/Diabetes Educator has extensive knowledge in the area of diabetes,
cholesterol management, nutrition and healthy lifestyle. She runs a
weekly clinic and has recently introduced supermarket visits to assist
patients to read and understand food labels and help with their own
healthy food choices. This service is popular and the response from
patients has been very positive. For more information or to make an
appointment, please ring Sue at the Medical Centre.
Maternity When you think you
are pregnant, this can be confirmed by one of our practice nurses who will
then suggest an appointment with your usual doctor to discuss your options
for maternity care.
Child Health Clinics Our child health
nurses, Donna and Norma, are registered nurses who specialize in providing
well child assessments and immunisation services by appointment. The
assessment covers growth and development, advice on breastfeeding and
nutrition, routine child management and parenting support.
Children’s immunisations are provided in the clinic and the nurses are
happy to discuss the updating or completion of your child’s
immunisations. Donna and Norma are very good at helping with child
issues such as behaviour, feeding and toileting. Clinic appointments
can be booked by phoning the receptionist. Clinics are held Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday
afternoons.
Family Planning All our doctors have
experience in this area. Your own doctor will be happy to help you with
decisions and choices.
Vasectomy Dr Graham McGeoch
generally performs these on a Friday morning. He uses the Li
minimally invasive technique, which has a quick recovery time and low rate
of complications. You and your partner need to be sure that you have
finished your family and that vasectomy is the best option. If you
are not sure, discuss this with your own doctor. An appointment will be
made for at least one week prior to the vasectomy to enable Dr McGeoch to
do a pre-operation examination and answer any questions you may
have. An easy to understand information pack detailing the process,
procedure and after care will have been either posted out or given to you
prior to this appointment. The operation is relatively simple and
performed under local anaesthetic. It takes less than 30 minutes but
you should allow one hour from arrival at the medical centre to collection
afterwards. It is preferable that you arrange for someone to collect
you after the procedure or catch a taxi home. Most people are able
to return to work on the following Monday. Click here for further information regarding vasectomy,
or contact the medical centre.
Insurance Medicals These
are best done by your own doctor. The insurance company will give
you and your doctor very specific instructions on what they require.
The usual is a half hour appointment with paperwork completed by you
beforehand and be prepared for a blood test, urine sample and full
physical examination, not often involving rectal or vaginal
examinations. The company will usually pay the fees if they have
requested the medical
Musculoskeletal Medicine Dr McGeoch
has a particular interest in this area, but many problems can be dealt
with by your usual doctor.
Sports Injuries See your own
GP for injuries and pains sustained playing sport. Most of
these can be managed at our Centre. Graham McGeoch has a
Diploma of Musculoskeletal Medicine, Danny Cai does acupuncture, Rose
Pearcy podiatry and Barrington Physiotherapy Clinic are excellent.
Why take your sports injuries elsewhere?
Diving
Medicine Sport Diving Medicals These can be done by your
usual doctor for healthy young people. They should be done before you
start your dive course because a number of people are recommended not to
dive. People over 55 or those who have ever had any long term disorders
such as asthma should see Dr McGeoch. Ring for an appointment and clearly
state that you want a sport diving medical because you will need a nurse's
appointment and a doctor's appointment. You will need to allow about 45-60
minutes and be prepared to provide a urine sample. The medical involves a
questionnaire, hearing test, vision test, breathing tests, urine test,
blood pressure and physical examination.
Commercial Dive
Medicals These are required by anyone planning to work as a diver
even if this is only a small part of their job including diving
instructors. The medical should be done before investing time and money
into diving as a career as standards are very strict. These are only done
by Dr McGeoch. He does NZ medicals which are valid all over the world
except where HSE is required. He cannot do HSE medicals. Ring for an
appointment and clearly state that you want a sport diving medical because
you will need a nurse's appointment and a doctor's appointment. Allow
about 90 minutes. All the tests are done in this time except x-rays which
are occasionally required and need to be completed elsewhere. The
paperwork is sent away with one of your cheques for $75 (please bring
this) and a certificate of completion is issued about two weeks later.
This is sent to Occupational Health and Safety with your diving
qualifications and a Certificate of Competency issued. Please also bring
identification and your logbook.
Natural and Herbal
Medicine Dr Rosie Ford has a special interest in this. She will be
happy to see you on a longer appointment after a discussion with your own
doctor.
Chaperone We offer all our patients the right to
have a chaperone present during examinations if they wish. You may wish to
bring a support person with you or have a nurse chaperone. Please ask your
doctor or practice nurse.
Sleep Study If you are having
problems with snoring or day time sleepiness then come along and talk to
one of our doctors. Regular, severe snoring is a big problem for the
snorer and their partner. Proper assessment is important to decide
on proper treatment. Please see your doctor and they may suggest a
Sleep Study which is done at home using a piece of equipment loaned to
you.
